Chapter Twenty

Liam

“This is your last chance to back out. Any final words before you’re officially a married man?” Liam teased as he walked into Barrett’s bedroom, where his brother was getting ready for his wedding.

“I can’t wait.” Barrett’s smile was so big it looked goofy on his face. “There’s nothing that could keep me from marrying my beautiful bride. If anything, I’m worried about her backing out. I don’t know how I got so lucky.”

Liam snorted. “Would you believe she actually said the same thing to me this morning when I warned her it was her final opportunity to back out?”

“Really?” Barrett looked at him with a starry-eyed expression.

“Yeah, so you’d better hurry up before she discovers how much of a nincompoop you are.” He pulled Barrett into a headlock, and the two wrestled for a moment, like they were children again. Barrett tousled Liam’s hair when they were done, and Liam smiled at his older brother. “I’m happy you found each other. Jules is perfect for you.”

Barrett took off his shirt and put on a white button-up. “She really is. Now we have to find the perfect girl for you—unless you already know who it is.” He waggled his eyebrows.

I know who my heart would choose if I allowed it to make the decision. But I don’t know who my head—my logic—will allow me to choose in the end.

“That pause says it all.” Barrett’s eyes widened. “Talk. Who’s the perfect girl for you?”

“It’s your big day. We can talk about my love life after you get back from your honeymoon.” Liam would avoid his brother’s question like a matador side-stepping a bull.

Barrett looked at him for a moment before he continued putting on his white ceremonial suit. “Fine, but I’m not going to forget this conversation.” A sly smile pulled at his lips. “Well, I might forget it on my honeymoon because I will have plenty of other things on my mind then.” He winked at Liam. “But when I get back, I will immediately be coming to you for the details regarding who has caught The Royal Heartbreaker’s fancy.”

“I’ll see you out there.” He started walking toward the door when he suddenly remembered what he’d brought for his brother. “Oh, I almost forgot.” Liam reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the cufflinks Barrett had given him with his parents’ handwritten “I love you” on them. “I wanted you to borrow these for the day. To have Mom and Dad close to you.”

Liam reached out for a handshake, but Barrett pulled him in for a hug with tears in his eyes.

“Thank you.” When Barrett let go, his dopey, lovesick smile had returned.

Liam slipped out of the room and had his driver, Dean, take him to the large chapel where the wedding would be held. He braced himself before he entered the building. Inside, he would join the nine women still remaining in the competition. And he was trying not to freak out that he would be celebrating his own wedding day with one of them before he knew it.
